Kaalan is a delightful South Indian dish, and the recipe in traditional Kerala style it is made using the main ingredients, Chena ( Elephant foot Yam), raw banana, yogurt, and coconut. Kaalan is made primarily on Onam festival in Kerala. You can prepare this dish with less effort.

- Raw Banana) - 1 (medium-sized)
- Chena ( Elephant foot Yam) (cut in cubes) - ½ cup
- Curd - 2 cups (well-stirred)
- Turmeric powder - 1 tbsp
- Grated coconut - ½ cup
- Cumin seeds - ½ tsp
- Green chilies - 4-5 nos
- Chilli powder - half tbsp
- Black pepper powder - 1 tbsp
- Fenugreek seeds powder - ½ tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Curry leaves
- Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
- Dry Red Chillies - 3
- Coconut oil - 1 tsp
- Heat four cups water in a pan, add the chopped raw bananas, Chena (Yam), chili powder, salt, black pepper powder, fenugreek seeds powder, and turmeric powder.
- Simmer for two minutes.
- Grind the grated coconut, green chilies, and cumin seeds into a smooth paste. Add the paste to the pan and mix them well.
- Gently bring this to boil and decrease flame to low.
- Add the curd gradually and continuously stir so that it does not curdle.
- Remove the pan from the flame.
- Heat the coconut oil for seasoning in another pan. Fry the seasoning ingredients and pour over the dish.
- Serve hot with steamed rice.
